The Production Center for Documentary & Drama

The Production Center for Documentary & Drama is the professional production arm of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts at San Diego State University. The Center is located in the School of Theatre, Television and Film. Established in 1990, the Center brings professionals in many fields together with advanced and graduate TFM students to enhance the study of production techniques, produce films, television programs, and public service announcements, and provide students with the following:

  • Graduate level training in evolving film and video technologies and professional guidance with personal
    projects.
  • Public forums, including national broadcasts, for exhibition of new work.
  • Opportunities for work on location and studio productions with high artistic and technical standards, creative originality, and documentary accuracy that are intended for broadcast and/or educational distribution in the arts, humanities, and sciences.
  • Participation in the academic and outreach purposes of SDSU and the California State University in cooperation with a range of national and international organizations and institutions.

As a full cost-recovery operation, The Production Center conceptualizes, researches, and prepares proposals for extramural funding from education, government, foundations, business, and individuals. Funds support Center activities and are administered by the SDSU Foundation. The Center encourages projects that reflect America’s diversity and affirm human dignity.

Production Center facilities and equipment include a full range of film and broadcast equipment, complete studio and location capability, and a digital video editing suite. Capabilities include planning, budgeting, scripting, world-wide filming and taping, and post-production.

The Center has produced dozens of award-winning documentaries, such as the Balboa Park series, Sunshine and Shadow, A Safe Place, Dancers, Tolerance on Trial, Environmental Crimes at the Border and Shadow Children, as well as the television series Carousel and The Short List. The Center also produces shows for KPBS-TV, including the Emmy nominated concert series Live at the Belly Up, as well as television specials, such as San Diego Ballet Presents: The Nutcracker, and San Diego Opera’s Soldier Songs.
