Bio
Carlton Daniel Jr. is a writer-director from Cleveland, OH, who makes films that explore the nuanced experiences of Black and LGBTQIA+ American life. Their storytelling, which spans drama, romance, and horror, focuses on themes such as coming-of-age, be/longing, and love.
Daniel made a notable debut with their award-winning short film Monogamish, which garnered acclaim at over 20 festivals internationally and premiered at Outfest LA. Their follow-up short film, Homegoing, earned a $40K production grant from CNYArts and went on to screen at Academy and BAFTA-qualifying film festivals, including the American Black Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Palm Springs International ShortFest, Inside Out Toronto, and Outfest LA.
Currently, Daniel is developing a feature-length adaptation of Homegoing, which was selected for the Outfest Screenwriting Lab and the AT&T & Tribeca Film Festival’s Untold Stories film competition. They were also a semifinalist for the New Voices Filmmaker Grant at NewFest and the AFI Conservatory’s DWW+.
Daniel’s latest project includes writing and directing an episode titled “Rebecca” for 20th Digital Studio’s horror anthology series, Bite Size Halloween, which premiered at the Urbanworld Film Festival and is now streaming on Hulu. Additionally, Daniel is in post-production on their newest short film, Fly.
With an MFA from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, Daniel is currently an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University.
